About this Autumn Herbal Cottage Moon Phases embroidery pattern

Autumn Herbal Cottage Moon Phases brings celestial and witchy details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: rust-and-cream herbal cottage, five potion bottles, olive/sage foliage, plum thistle-like blooms, copper leaves, gold stars and a surrounding ring of pale moon phases.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 cm HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence

  1. TRANSFER + FINE STRUCTURE Transfer cottage geometry, bottle silhouettes, branch centerlines, flower centers and every moon/star. Establish roof ridges, window divisions and bottle shoulders first with one strand so the small architecture stays square and symmetrical.
  2. COTTAGE + WINDOWS Thread-paint roof planes from ridge to eaves using 3371/938/801, overlapping short rows like shingles. Fill plaster in 3033 with sparse 920/921 warmth. Underpad only larger wall panels, then add glowing window centers in 922/729 and crisp one-strand bars last.
  3. POTION BOTTLES Outline bottle glass in one strand 3371. Shade warm liquids with 3777/920/921 and green liquid with 3011/3051, keeping sidewalls darker and centers lighter. Pad corks horizontally, satin vertically in 801, then finish 3033/3865 labels and tiny marks.
  4. FOLIAGE + FLOWERS Fishbone olive leaves in 3051/3052/3011 and copper leaves in 920/921, rotating stitch direction with every stem. Build plum flower heads from 154 into 3041 using short long-and-short or detached-chain petals, then place compact French-knot centers.
  5. MOON PHASES Lightly underpad only the larger moon disks/crescents perpendicular to the final stitch direction. Cover smoothly in 3865 along each lunar curve; add restrained 729 or 3033 shading only where the artwork shows warm edges so the ring remains pale.
  6. STARS + FINAL BALANCE Add 729 starbursts and tiny French-knot dots last, then check circular spacing between moon phases and foliage. Reinforce only key bottle/cottage edges, bury tails beneath filled motifs and steam-block from the reverse
