The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence

  1. Lay the ornamental framework Transfer and backstitch the copper/charcoal scrolls, moon crescents, stars and bottle lettering while the fabric is still open and easy to access.
  2. Build the crow Split-stitch the silhouette, then layer long-and-short feather groups from the shoulder outward. Add eye, beak and feet last for crisp detail.
  3. Stitch bottles and labels Outline each bottle and cork, shade the glass vertically, then complete labels and tiny lettering with one strand.
  4. Work the candle and gold accents Fill the candle, holder and flame; add smoke, moons and starbursts, keeping the gold elements visually lighter than the crow.
  5. Add herbs, leaves and flowers Fishbone the sage leaves, stitch fine herb stems, then add the golden berry sprays and small orange botanical accents.
  6. Finish knots and cleanup Add scattered French-knot dots, inspect symmetry of the wreath, secure thread ends and remove any visible travel threads
