About this Raven Golden Key Gothic Floral Wreath embroidery pattern

Raven Golden Key Gothic Floral Wreath brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: black raven carrying an antique gold key, framed by looping sage vines, cool green leaves, burgundy berries and flowers, ivory skulls, and gold/charcoal starbursts.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 cm HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Color and stitch guidance

The supplied guide proposes 16 DMC colors. Compare important shades with real floss under your working light.

The supplied guide labels this design advanced. Allow time for controlled spacing and detailed areas.

warm ivory linen/cotton, 28-32 count; firm enough for dense raven

Stitching sequence

  1. TRANSFER + VINE FRAME Transfer raven, key, skulls, flowers, berry groups and the full looping wreath. Work the long vine curves first in 934/3051 short stem-stitch segments through every bend; add secondary tendrils in one-strand split stitch before dense fills obscure junctions.
  2. RAVEN THREAD PAINTING Map crown, throat, shoulder, covert, flight and tail feather tracts. Thread-paint with 310/3799/413 in overlapping shingle-like rows, following feather growth. Use 317 only as very narrow ridge light and finish the eye last with a minute 3865 catchlight.
  3. GOLDEN KEY RELIEF Underpad only the broad key bow horizontally, then cover lengthwise in 729 with 676 on the top-facing edge and 938 in recessed details. Keep the shaft and teeth crisp with one-strand stem/split stitch rather than bulky satin.
  4. LEAVES + BURGUNDY BERRIES Fishbone foliage in 934/3051/3052, rotating stitch angle with each leaf. Build berries from compact 3802/3726 French knots and reserve 154 for darkest berries or cluster cores. Keep stems fine so berry groups read dimensional without looking heavy.
  5. IVORY SKULLS + FLOWERS Pad skull foreheads very lightly, then satin/long-and-short in 3865/822 with 3862 only under cheekbones and socket edges. Work burgundy flowers radially in 3802/3726/154 and pale flowers in 3865/822; finish centers with restrained 729 knots.
  6. STARS + FINAL FINISH Add gold starbursts and scattered dots with one-strand 729/676 straight stitches and knots; use 310 only for selected charcoal stars. Check circular rhythm at arm's length, refine feather separations, bury dark tails beneath dense motifs and steam-block from the reverse
