The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 cm HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence

  1. PHASES 1. TRANSFER + STRUCTURAL FRAME Transfer the central jack-o-lantern, hat silhouette, pumpkin ribs, facial openings, wreath circle, skull placements, rosette groups, white-knot clusters, leaf stems, stars and gold curls. Stitch only the main green/gold stem scaffolding first in 3011/3829; keep curls and delicate outer lines to one strand. 2. MAIN FOCAL ELEMENT Fill the pumpkin in 729/3852, directing long-and-short stitches from the upper shoulder down each rib. Use 3829 and sparing 315/433 in the rib valleys, underside and carved face. Keep highlights broad on rib centers and shadows narrow so the pumpkin reads full and luminous. 3. SECONDARY LARGE ELEMENT Stitch the witch hat in 310 with 3799 softening selected folds; keep cone strokes diagonal with the fabric direction and brim strokes horizontal/radiating. Add the 920 band as a flat satin strip, then the 729 buckle last. Keep the hat dense and smooth, not raised. 4. SKULLS / FOLIAGE / ROSETTES Fill the small skulls in 3799 with 414 highlights, then add eye sockets, nose and teeth in one-strand 310. Work sage foliage in 3011/3012/3013 and burgundy sprigs in 315/3726, always base-to-tip. Add rust/gold rosettes in 920/921 and 3829/729 after stems so they sit forward. 5. SMALL DETAIL WORK Add 3865/822 French-knot clusters with subtle size variation, then stitch the golden wheat-like spray and tiny stars in 729/3852. Refine pumpkin face edges with 315/433, place rosette center shadows, and add the finest vine curls and isolated dots last so negative space stays clean. 6. FINAL DETAILS + BLOCKING Check the circular wreath for even visual weight: distribute rust, gold, burgundy and charcoal without letting any side dominate. Refine only essential outlines, keep skull details crisp and small, bury dark tails away from the ivory ground, then steam from the reverse and block flat without crushing rosettes or French knots
