About this Autumnal Bird Pumpkins embroidery pattern

Autumnal Bird Pumpkins brings celestial details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Upside-down dark bird on a curling branch, hanging antique-gold key, burgundy and ochre pumpkins, wine-red berries, deep green foliage and scattered autumn stars.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 CM HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Color and stitch guidance

The supplied guide proposes 15 DMC colors. Compare important shades with real floss under your working light.

Stitching sequence

  1. 1. TRANSFER + STRUCTURE Transfer bird, branch, key, inner vine circle and outer wreath first. Mark feather groups and pumpkin rib lines lightly; keep the cream fabric visible between motifs. 2. BIRD + FEATHERS Build the bird from 310/3799 into 413, adding 318 only on feather tips. Follow each feather direction with short long-and-short stitches; define divisions with one-strand split stitch. 3. LARGE BURGUNDY PUMPKIN Shade lobes from 814 at the valleys through 815, lifting selected ridges with 816. Work stitches vertically along each lobe; stem and curl use 801/420. 4. FOLIAGE + BRANCH Stem stitch the curling branch in 801 with 420 highlights. Fishbone leaves from 500/3051 into 3052, keeping the central vein clean and tips sharp. 5. BERRIES + SMALL PUMPKINS Use padded satin or compact satin for 814/815/816 berries. Shade ochre pumpkins from 3829 into 729; add narrow rib lines after the fill so their segmentation stays crisp. 6. KEY + STARS + DETAILS Outline the hanging key in one strand 3829, then add 729 highlights. Finish stars with sparse straight stitches and place the 3865 eye glint last. FINISHING & PRESSING NOTES Preserve open ivory fabric around the bird and between leaf clusters. Press from the reverse over a folded towel so padded berries and pumpkin lobes remain rounded. Trim dark bird tails carefully so no black thread shadows show through pale fabric
