About this Blackbird Key Bat embroidery pattern
Blackbird Key Bat brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Central flying blackbird carrying a small antique-gold key; five black bats; symmetrical scrolling blue-green vines; olive leaves; copper starbursts and berries; cream stars and dots forming a circular botanical Halloween wreath.
The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size
The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.
A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.
Color and stitch guidance
The supplied guide proposes 15 DMC colors. Compare important shades with real floss under your working light.
The supplied guide labels this design intermediate. Allow time for controlled spacing and detailed areas.
Stitching sequence
- Transfer the complete blackbird silhouette and feather groups, key, five bats, all scrolling vine curves, olive and blue-green leaves, copper starbursts, cream stars, berries and small dots. Preserve the open center around the bird.
- Work the finest line elements first: key outline and ring, bat contours, small cream stars, copper starbursts and tiny isolated dots. Use one strand where the artwork shows delicate lines.
- Build the blackbird from darkest to lightest: 310 in the deepest overlaps, 3799 through the main body and wing masses, then 317 sparingly on selected feather ridges. Follow natural feather flow from shoulder toward wing tips and tail.
- Complete the key in 729, keeping the shaft smooth and the bow crisp. Add one-strand dark definition only where the key overlaps the beak or needs separation from nearby black stitches.
- Stitch the scrolling wreath with 924/926/927 on blue-green vines and leaves, then 934/936/3012 on olive leaves. Keep stem-stitch curves fluid and work leaves from center vein outward for sharp points.
- Finish the bats in 310/3799, then add 920/921/922 copper starbursts and berries plus 3865/822 cream stars and dots. Balance knot size and spacing symmetrically around the wreath and make final one-strand feather corrections. FINISHING: Steam from the reverse over a towel. Do not flatten layered blackbird feathers, padded bat bodies, berry knots, raised star centers or the key ring
