About this Crescent Key with Ivory Ghosts and Midnight Botanical Wreath embroidery pattern
Crescent Key with Ivory Ghosts and Midnight Botanical Wreath brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Central antique key topped by an ornate crescent moon; six floating ivory and gray ghosts; symmetrical midnight botanical wreath of navy ferns, black sprigs, plum leaves, curled vines, berries, stars and pearl-like dots.
The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size
The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.
The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 cm HOOP for this design.
A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence
- Transfer and structural frameworkTransfer the key centerline, crescent head, shaft collars and teeth first, then place all six ghosts, major fern and branch axes, curled vine endpoints, berries, stars and pearl dots. Establish the key outline and main navy scroll skeleton in one strand 939/823 before any fills so the circular wreath stays balanced and open.
- Main focal element Work the crescent key from dark recesses to light: 3799/3740 in deepest engraved areas, 315/3041 through the plum midtones, then 3743/318/3865 for metal highlights. Keep satin stitches aligned with each crescent segment and shaft collar; use one-strand backstitch on key teeth and inner engravings only after the larger fills are stable.
- Secondary large element Build the six ghosts as soft floating forms. Use 645/318 for the two gray ghosts and 3864/822/3865 for the warmer ivory ghosts, with long-and-short stitches flowing from head downward into each tapering tail. Keep the darkest shading on lower or outer edges, then add tiny 310 faces last so the expressions stay sharp.
- Foliage / supporting motifs Layer the botanical wreath outward from the main stems: 939/823/336 for navy ferns and curls, 310 for the black leafy sprigs, and 3740/315/3041/3743 for plum-to-mauve leaves. Use fishbone stitches from leaf bases toward tips and short straight stitches along fern spines, preserving clear gaps around every ghost.
- Small decorative details Add plum berries in 3740/315 French knots or compact satin, ivory pearl knots in 822/3865, and gray-beige seed details in 648/3864. Work starbursts in 318/3865 and selective 3041 accents with varied ray lengths, then reinforce the most graceful navy and plum scroll curls in one strand for a clean ornamental rhythm.
- Final accents, dimensional details, cleanup, and blocking Place 3865 glints on the key and brightest ghost edges, sharpen ghost eyes and mouths with one strand 310, and add tiny 939/310 anchor points only where the wreath needs contrast. Check that the key remains the darkest central vertical, ghosts read as soft secondary forms, foliage forms an even circle without crowding, and all pale travel threads are hidden before reverse blocking
