About this Hanging Bat with Lunar Phase Ring Clouds Stars embroidery pattern

Hanging Bat with Lunar Phase Ring Clouds Stars brings celestial details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: A large upside-down bat hangs from a twisting black-gray branch at the center. Eight circular lunar phases form a near-complete ring around it, alternating warm old-gold and cool gray shadow fields. Pale curling clouds, scattered starbursts, tiny crosses and metallic-looking knots create the celestial background. Artwork reference - complete composition, undistorted.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 cm HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence

  1. PHASES 1. TRANSFER + PHASE FRAME Transfer the central branch and hanging bat first, then mark all eight moon circles from a shared visual center so their spacing stays even. Add cloud silhouettes and only the larger stars. Establish each lunar outline in one-strand 3781/680 before any dense fill. 2. LUNAR PHASE RING Fill the eight medallions in sequence around the hoop. Use 729/3822 for illuminated gold sections and 414/415/317 for cool shadows. Keep the phase boundary on each disk crisp, follow the circle curvature, and maintain similar stitch density from one moon to the next. 3. CENTRAL BRANCH Build the twisting branch with 310/3799/3021, following each fork continuously from the main limb into smaller twigs. Add 413 along selected upper ridges for bark relief. Keep twig tips fine and angular so the branch remains graphic rather than bulky. 4. HANGING BAT Work the bat from deepest 310/3799 into 413/414 midtones, directing stitches from the body through each wing panel. Preserve the scalloped wing edges and clear finger-like supports. Add the 822/3865 chest tuft, pale face, tiny eyes and nose only after the large dark fills are smooth. 5. CLOUDS + STARS Outline the curling clouds in 762/415/318 with fine backstitch and minimal interior shaping. Add gray starbursts with 317/415 and gold stars with 680/729/3822. Keep the star field asymmetric and leave generous ivory gaps between motifs. 6. KNOTS + FINAL BLOCKING Scatter small French knots in 680, 729, 317 and 415, using mostly one wrap. Check the lunar ring for even spacing, clean phase boundaries and balanced gold/gray alternation. Remove transfer residue and block gently from the reverse so the circles and branch remain flat
