About this Moonlit Cemetery Gate embroidery pattern

Moonlit Cemetery Gate brings celestial and gothic details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Ornate wrought-iron cemetery gate, graveyard path and headstones; crescent moon and bats; pumpkins, stone walls, berries, branches and autumn leaves.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 CM HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Color and stitch guidance

The supplied guide proposes 15 DMC colors. Compare important shades with real floss under your working light.

Stitching sequence

  1. 1. TRANSFER + IRONWORK Transfer the gate first with every major scroll, vertical bar and finial, then add pillars, walls, grave markers, path, moon, bats and the full botanical ring. Keep tiny stars and berry centers as light marks. 2. GATE + CEMETERY Work the gate in 310 with one-strand split/backstitch for clean curls and bars. Add 3799 only where a softer dark is needed. Build headstones and distant cemetery shapes from 844/645 into 647. 3. STONE WALLS + PATH Shade pillars and walls with directional long-and-short using 844, 645 and 647. Keep mortar seams crisp in split stitch. Work path marks in 647/3865, narrowing spacing toward the center distance. 4. MOON + BATS Satin the crescent mainly in 729 with 3865 at the light edge. Fill bats in 310, following wing direction. Add tiny stars with 729/3865 straight stitches or compact French knots. 5. PUMPKINS + AUTUMN FOLIAGE Build pumpkin segments in 920, brightening ridges with 922 and deepening creases with 801. Fishbone leaves in 3051/3011, then add ochre/rust accents with 3829/920 and pale leaves with 3865. 6. BRANCHES + BERRIES + FINISH Stem stitch branches in 801/420 before berries. Build red clusters with 814 padded satin/French knots and pale berries with 729/3865. Finish grass, veins, tendrils and tiny gate details in one strand. FINISHING & PRESSING NOTES Keep the gate openings clean and unfilled so the ironwork remains airy. Press from the reverse over a padded towel to protect raised pumpkins and berry clusters; reshape gate scrolls gently after pressing
