About this Victorian Boot Roses Moths embroidery pattern

Victorian Boot Roses Moths brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Dark brown lace-up Victorian boot; black roses; deep teal central flower; rust-orange flowers; ivory yarrow clusters; olive foliage and berry wreath; teal, rust and cream moths; crescent moons, stars and hanging celestial charms.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Color and stitch guidance

The supplied guide proposes 15 DMC colors. Compare important shades with real floss under your working light.

The supplied guide labels this design intermediate. Allow time for controlled spacing and detailed areas.

Stitching sequence

  1. Transfer the complete boot silhouette, laces, flower cluster, yarrow sprays, olive wreath, moths, berry stems, hanging chains, crescent moons and stars. Preserve the open ivory fabric between motifs.
  2. Establish the boot with 3371/938/801, following the toe, vamp, shaft and heel planes. Use 433 only for warm raised highlights; keep the laces and seam edges crisp with one- or two-strand backstitch.
  3. Build the black roses in 310/3371 with layered petals and narrow highlights. Work the central teal flower in 924/926 and the rust flowers in 920/921, radiating stitches from each center and using 3826 for compact knot centers.
  4. Create the ivory yarrow clusters with 822 knots over fine stem-stitch spokes. Work the olive wreath and supporting foliage in 934/3011/3012, changing stitch direction at every leaf midrib.
  5. Stitch the moths with 924/926, 920/921, 822 and 3826. Follow each wing section separately with long-and-short or satin stitch; add markings as short straight stitches and finish antennae with one strand.
  6. Add rust berry branches, hanging chains and celestial charms. Use 729 for moons/stars, 920/921 for berries and 801/3371 for fine chain or stem detail. Inspect symmetry, hoop clearance and thread tails before reverse pressing. FINISHING: Steam from the reverse over a towel. Avoid flattening black-rose petals, yarrow knots, moth wing texture and the dimensional boot shading
