About this Wrought Iron Gate embroidery pattern

Wrought Iron Gate brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Tall black wrought-iron double gate with spiderweb panels; black and gray bats; taupe-gray mushroom cluster; charcoal foliage; wheat-gold branches; ivory flowers and dots; soft lavender stars and violet accents.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

This watermarked preview shows the transfer drawing. Clean outlines are included in the purchased pattern PDF.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Color and stitch guidance

The supplied guide proposes 15 DMC colors. Compare important shades with real floss under your working light.

The supplied guide labels this design intermediate. Allow time for controlled spacing and detailed areas.

Stitching sequence

  1. Transfer the full gate, all scrolls, web spokes, bats, mushrooms, branches, leaves, flowers, starbursts and knot dots. Keep the central gate perfectly symmetrical and preserve the open fabric between motifs.
  2. Work the finest one-strand structure first: gate scrolls, web lines, small branch stems and star spokes. Use short even backstitches so curved ironwork remains smooth and web intersections stay precise.
  3. Build the gate posts and broad iron sections with 310, then soften selected highlights with 3799. Keep edges sharply defined; do not allow gray highlights to weaken the black wrought-iron silhouette.
  4. Fill black bats in 310 and lighter bats through 3799/413/414/318. Follow wing membrane direction from body to wing tips and keep facial dots tiny so the bats stay readable at embroidery scale.
  5. Shade mushrooms from 3021/413 through 3864/3782/822, adding 3865 cap spots only after the fills are complete. Work gills with fine radiating stitches and keep stems slightly darker at the base.
  6. Finish gold branches and wheat in 729/3045, ivory flowers in 3865/822, and lavender stars in 210/211/3743. Add final knot dots, rebalance left/right density, then inspect the web and gate symmetry. FINISHING: Steam from the reverse over a towel. Do not flatten mushroom padding, bat texture, French knots or the raised gate posts
