About this Autumn Lantern 2 embroidery pattern

Autumn Lantern 2 brings celestial details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Central vintage lantern with a glowing candle, pale luna-style moths and smaller moths, drifting smoke, crescent moon and stars, burgundy/green/gold autumn foliage, seed pods, candles and dark berry clusters.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 CM HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence

  1. 1. TRANSFER + LANTERN AXIS Mark the lantern centerline first, then the outer frame, crescent and four largest moth placements. Add smoke paths and lower candles only after the focal geometry is centered. 2. LANTERN FRAME + GLASS Build uprights and scrollwork with 3799/3371 in one-strand split/backstitch; couch only the thickest bars. Shade the roof and base with 936/935 plus 3857 accents. Keep glass translucent with sparse 778/316 vertical stitches. 3. CENTRAL CANDLE + FLAME Pad the candle lightly, then satin with 676 and 3865 highlights. Use 3829 for the lower shadow edge. Work the flame in 676 with a 3865 center and tiny 729 straight rays around it. 4. LARGE MOTHS + SMALL MOTHS Outline large moths in 315, then fill lightly from wing base outward using 3865, 778 and limited 316. Add veins last in one strand. Smaller moths use 316/778 with 422/938 bodies; keep wing tips delicate. 5. AUTUMN FOLIAGE + PODS Use directional long-and-short on burgundy leaves with 3857; fishbone green leaves in 936/935 and gold leaves in 3829/729. Satin seed pods with 422 and 3829 shadows; stem-stitch the fine pod stalks. 6. SMOKE + CELESTIAL FINISH Trace smoke curls in 762 with one-strand stem/backstitch, adding occasional 315 for depth without making them heavy. Satin the crescent with 676/3865, then add 729 stars, 3799 berry knots and final highlight points. FINISHING & PRESSING NOTES Press from the reverse over a padded towel. Protect padded candle and berry knots, and avoid flattening raised lantern bars. Re-block so the lantern stays vertical and the smoke curls retain their open spacing
