About this Candlelit Gothic Lantern, Moths and Ivy embroidery pattern
Candlelit Gothic Lantern, Moths and Ivy brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Central candle lantern, four moths including a large luna moth, ivy and blackberry wreath, purple thistles, curling tendrils, celestial symbols, stars, rays, and scattered dots.
The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size
The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.
The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 cm HOOP for this design.
A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence
- Transfer and structural frameworkCenter the lantern first, then map the four moth silhouettes and the full ivy-blackberry wreath. Establish the lantern skeleton in 310/844 with 1-strand backstitch, and lightly mark the main 3362 vine path so the circular spacing stays even.
- Main focal element Build the lantern from the inner candle outward. Model the metal with 3799, 844, 420, and 433, keeping the darkest values in recesses and under the cap; place 738/3865 in the glass highlights, then finish the 680 flame and radiating light so the glow remains the brightest focal zone.
- Secondary large element Stitch the moths next, working each wing from the body outward. Use 310/3799 with 738/3865 on the upper-left moth, 420/433/738 on the cream-brown moths, and 368 with 3347 on the luna moth; reserve crisp 1-strand veins and antennae until the fills are complete.
- Foliage / supporting motifs Complete the wreath with 3362 stems and 3012/3013 ivy leaves, directing fishbone stitches from each central vein toward the edge. Keep darker greens behind the moths and lantern, then place lighter leaf tips where the wreath needs separation from the warm fabric.
- Small decorative details Add blackberry clusters in 154 with 3834 highlights, then work the thistle blooms, plum symbols, gold stars, rays, and tiny dots. Keep knots dimensional but compact, and add the smallest celestial marks only after nearby vines are finished so they remain clean and readable.
- Final accents, dimensional details, cleanup, and blocking Sharpen selective lantern corners with 1-strand 310, reinforce moth wing highlights with 3865, and add final 680 sparkle points around the candle. Check that berry knots do not crowd the wreath contour, trim any fuzzy carried threads, and block from the reverse so the lantern stays square and the wreath remains circular
