About this Celestial Blackberry Moth Ivy embroidery pattern

Celestial Blackberry Moth Ivy brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Large celestial moth with black-plum upper wings, crescent moon phases, pale sage lower wings and textured body; circular ivy-and-blackberry wreath; olive scroll vines; cream flowers and small old-gold stars.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

This watermarked preview shows the transfer drawing. Clean outlines are included in the purchased pattern PDF.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Color and stitch guidance

The supplied guide proposes 15 DMC colors. Compare important shades with real floss under your working light.

The supplied guide labels this design intermediate. Allow time for controlled spacing and detailed areas.

Stitching sequence

  1. Transfer the full moth, every crescent and star, the complete circular ivy-and-blackberry wreath, cream flowers and all scroll-vine details. Keep the moth centered and preserve the open linen around the wings.
  2. Outline the moth with 310/3799. Build the upper-wing fields with 310, 154, 3740 and 3041 in smooth body-outward long-and-short stitch, keeping the plum border visibly separate from the black central panels.
  3. Fill the lower wings with 3051/3052/3053 plus 822/3024/3865 highlights. Work the body with compact satin and long-and-short stitches, then add the crescent moon phases in 3865 and 822 with crisp satin edges.
  4. Stitch the wreath vines in 3011/3012 and fill ivy leaves in 3051/3052/3053 using base-to-tip fishbone direction. Add one-strand veins only after the leaf fills are settled.
  5. Build each blackberry from clustered 154/3740/3041 French or colonial knots, keeping the darkest knots toward the lower or inner shadow. Work cream flowers in 3865/822 and small botanical dots in 729/3820.
  6. Finish gold stars and rays with 729/3820 straight stitches, then add the tiny black and cream celestial specks. Check symmetry, berry relief and clean moth outlines; reverse press over a thick towel without crushing knots. FINISHING: Steam from the reverse over a towel. Protect raised blackberry knots and dense moth body stitches; keep the pale lower wings, crescent edges and ivy veins crisp
