About this Gothic Moon Phase Mirror with Crescent Reflection and Botanical embroidery pattern

Gothic Moon Phase Mirror with Crescent Reflection and Botanical brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: NEEDLE GAUGES Crewel #9-10 for 1-strand frame engraving, stars, cloud edges and tiny berry stems; #7-8 for 2-strand moon fills, leaves, woven roses and the dark mirror field. CORE MOTIFS Central arched gothic mirror with dark crescent reflection, ornate gray- blue frame, five moon-phase forms, paired clouds, symmetrical navy and gold scroll vines, gray-violet roses, olive foliage, berries and scattered stars.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 cm HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence

  1. Transfer and structural frameworkTransfer the mirror arch, inner glass boundary, moon-phase row, cloud silhouettes, major navy scroll spines, gold tendrils, rose positions and lower crossing stems. Establish the mirror symmetry first with 939/3799 in 1 strand so the arched frame stays centered before the wreath adds visual weight.
  2. Main focal element Build the central mirror from darkest interior outward. Fill the glass with short 310/939 long-and-short strokes, keeping the lower center nearly black and subtly lifting toward 3750 near the crescent reflection. Add the tiny 3865 crescent last, then model the frame from 3799 through 317 to 415 so the ornate molding reads above the flat mirror field.
  3. Secondary large element Work the five moon-phase forms and paired cloud bands next. Shade the moons from 3750/822 at the dark edges through 3865 on illuminated faces, following each circular contour rather than stitching straight across. Keep clouds flatter with 317/415/3865 and reserve the brightest white for upper ridges and star-facing edges.
  4. Foliage / supporting motifs Stitch the symmetrical wreath outward from the lower center. Use 939 for the dominant curling stems, 680 for the thinner gold tendrils, and 934/3051/3052 for vein-following leaves. Keep darker greens near the mirror and crossing stems, then place lighter leaves toward the outer arcs to maintain depth and separation.
  5. Small decorative details Add gray-violet roses, berries, buds, stars and sparkle dots only after the large curves are stable. Build rose centers in 3799/3740 and open outward through 3041/317; use 680/3820 for warm starbursts and seed dots, and keep the smallest black/navy dots sparse so the white background remains airy.
  6. Final accents, dimensional details, cleanup, and blocking Sharpen selected frame grooves with 1 strand 3750/3799, add 415 edge glints on the upper-facing scrollwork, and reinforce 3865 highlights on the moon phases and reflected crescent. Remove transfer marks from open fabric, check left-right wreath balance, then block from the reverse so the mirror arch and moon row remain geometrically true
