About this Plum Moth Skulls Wreath embroidery pattern

Plum Moth Skulls Wreath brings botanical and gothic details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Large plum moth with black, cream, sage and gold markings; four ivory skulls; circular botanical vine wreath with sage leaves, dark berries, cream buds and small plum flowers.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

This watermarked preview shows the transfer drawing. Clean outlines are included in the purchased pattern PDF.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Color and stitch guidance

The supplied guide proposes 15 DMC colors. Compare important shades with real floss under your working light.

The supplied guide labels this design intermediate. Allow time for controlled spacing and detailed areas.

Stitching sequence

  1. Transfer the full central moth, four surrounding skulls, circular vine wreath, every leaf cluster, berry group, cream bud and small plum flower. Keep the moth centered and preserve even linen space between the wings and wreath.
  2. Outline the moth with 310/3371, then build the plum wing fields with 154/3740/3041 in smooth body-outward long-and-short stitch. Work the black crescents and spots in 310 and add cream-gold arcs with 3865/739/420/729.
  3. Add sage wing markings with 3051/3052/524, keeping the veins narrow and directional. Fill the black body in 310 with compact long-and-short or satin stitch, then add fine cream-gold abdominal bands and antennae.
  4. Stitch each skull in 3865/822/739 with subtle long-and-short shading. Fill eye and nose cavities in 310, backstitch the teeth and curls with one strand, and add the small botanical crowns in 3740, 420 and 729.
  5. Build the wreath using 934/936/3051/3052/524: stem stitch for vines, fishbone stitch for narrow leaves and long-and-short stitch for broad leaves. Keep leaf veins crisp and let stitch direction follow each leaf from base to tip.
  6. Finish plum berries in 154/3740 as compact French or colonial knots, cream buds in 3865/739, and flower centers in 729. Check wreath balance, trim open-area carries, then reverse press over a towel so the moth body, skulls and knots retain relief. FINISHING: Steam from the reverse over a towel. Protect raised knots and keep the moth body, skull relief, flower centers, berries and textured leaves from flattening
