About this Skull Lantern with Moths Mushrooms Fern Wreath and Moon Phases embroidery pattern

Skull Lantern with Moths Mushrooms Fern Wreath and Moon Phases brings celestial and botanical details into a hand-embroidery composition. Study the colored design and outline together before choosing which shapes to shade, outline or simplify. The supplied guide identifies these motifs: Central antique skull lantern, five moths, fern wreath, mixed rust/taupe mushrooms, moon phases, hanging stars, smoke curls, leaves, and scattered dots.

The colored image is a design reference. Thread, fabric and your stitch choices will affect the finished result. Preserve the open spaces around the smaller motifs and test difficult fills on a spare piece of fabric before stitching the main design.

Choose your hoop size

The outline pages are labeled for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inch hoops. Measure the printed design before transfer, because printer margins and fit-to-page settings can affect its dimensions.

The stitch guide recommends 8" / 20 cm HOOP for this design.

A larger version gives fine contours and clustered motifs more room. Select the size that preserves the details you want to stitch.

Stitching sequence

  1. Transfer and structural frameworkEstablish the lantern centerline first, then the fern wreath oval, top moon-phase chain, moth bodies, and mushroom clusters. Work only the essential 310 and 3781 structural outlines in 1 strand, keeping the lantern perfectly upright and leaving the glow area open.
  2. Main focal element Build the skull lantern before surrounding motifs. Shade the metal from 3781 into 801 and 920, reserving 921 for warm rim accents. Stitch the cream flame and inner glow with 3865/712 last, then sharpen skull-and-crossbones panels with 1 strand 310 so the symbols remain crisp against the light center.
  3. Secondary large element Complete the five principal moths next. Work each wing from body outward: 3857 and 801 at bodies and dark borders, 920/921 through orange sections, then 3865/842 for pale wings and veining. Keep the upper-right pale moth lighter than the lower moths so it reads as a secondary highlight rather than a competing focal point.
  4. Foliage / supporting motifs Stitch the fern wreath and lower leafy sprays from the lantern outward. Use 3781 for stems, 3011 in the deepest leaf bases, 3012 as the main foliage tone, and 3052 only on selected tips. Keep leaf stitches narrow and vein-following so the wreath remains airy around the dense lantern.
  5. Small decorative details Add mushroom caps, taupe fungi, top moon phases, hanging stars, smoke wisps, and scattered dots after the major forms are stable. Layer mushroom caps dark-to-light with 801/920/921 or 839/842, place 3820/712 in the celestial ornaments, and keep smoke in 3865/842 as loose single-strand curves.
  6. Final accents, dimensional details, cleanup, and blocking Return with 1 strand 310 for lantern seams, skull features, moth antennae, and selected cap gills. Add final 712 flame highlights and 921 copper glints only at the end. Check that the wreath stays symmetrical, clip stray carries, then lightly block from the reverse to keep the lantern and mushroom bases flat
